The Full Blood Count (FBC) is the most commonly ordered blood test in Sri Lanka — for fever, fatigue, infection, anaemia and, importantly, for monitoring dengue. At St. Luke's Medical Laboratory in Ja-Ela we run it on a Medonic Hematology Analyzer, giving accurate blood counts quickly and affordably.

What the Medonic hematology analyzer does

A hematology analyzer counts and characterises the cells in your blood — red cells, white cells and platelets — automatically and in large numbers. A single FBC gives your doctor a snapshot of infection, anaemia, immune response and clotting ability all at once, which is why it's the starting point for so many diagnoses.

Which tests our Medonic analyzer powers

Test names and current LKR prices are the ones published on our price list — this article does not set prices.

Why this matters if you live near Ja-Ela — especially during dengue season

During a dengue infection, the platelet count can fall dangerously, and doctors ask patients to repeat the FBC daily to watch the trend. That only works if testing is fast, nearby and affordable. At LKR 400 for an FBC and LKR 400 for a platelet count, and with same-morning turnaround, we make daily monitoring practical for local families.

Running the Medonic in-house means patients from Ja-Ela, Kandana, Welisara (Walisara), Ragama, Wattala, Batagama and Thudella can get an FBC done close to home instead of queuing at a large hospital lab. For families along the Negombo Road corridor and around Wattala, we're a short trip up Old Negombo Road — which matters when you're monitoring dengue day by day.

If getting to the lab is hard while unwell, our home blood collection service can draw the sample at your home.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a Full Blood Count (FBC) near Ja-Ela? At St. Luke's Medical Laboratory, No. 67, Old Negombo Road, Ja-Ela. We run FBC on our Medonic analyzer for LKR 400 — see the price list.

How much does a platelet count cost, and how fast are results? A platelet count is LKR 400, with same-morning turnaround for samples given during working hours. Call 071 123 1954 to confirm timing.

Do I need to fast for an FBC? No — a Full Blood Count does not require fasting. You can come in any time during our opening hours.

Can I monitor my dengue platelets locally in Wattala or Kandana? Yes. Our Ja-Ela lab is a short drive for patients across Wattala, Kandana and the surrounding towns, and daily FBC / platelet monitoring is exactly what we're set up for.

What's the difference between an FBC and a Dengue NS1 test? The NS1 antigen test (LKR 1,200) detects dengue infection early. The FBC and platelet count then monitor how your blood is responding during the illness. Doctors often use them together.
