Why Regular Lipid Profiling is Crucial
Feb 10, 2026 · Medical Team
A Lipid Profile measures four fats in your blood that together predict your long-term heart-disease risk: Total Cholesterol, LDL ("bad"), HDL ("good"), and Triglycerides.
What the numbers mean
- LDL carries cholesterol into your arteries. High LDL = higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
- HDL carries cholesterol away. High HDL is protective.
- Triglycerides are extra calories your body stores. High levels often track with diabetes and poor diet.
Who should get it — and how often
| Group | How often |
|---|---|
| Healthy adults | Every 4–5 years from age 20 |
| Family history of heart disease | Every 1–2 years |
| Diabetes, high BP, or known high cholesterol | Every 6–12 months |
| On cholesterol medication | As your doctor advises |
How to prepare
- Fast 9–12 hours for the most accurate triglyceride reading. Water only.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before — alcohol spikes triglycerides.
- Take usual medications only if your doctor said to.
Why it matters in Sri Lanka
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Sri Lanka. A lipid profile costs LKR 1,500 at St. Luke's — small change for one of the most predictive tests in modern medicine.
