What the Ferritin test measures

Ferritin is the protein that stores iron. A low level is the earliest sign of iron deficiency — often before haemoglobin falls. Ferritin can also rise with inflammation, so doctors read it alongside the FBC and CRP.

Also known as: Serum ferritin, Iron stores test.

  • Tiredness, hair loss or low haemoglobin on an FBC
  • Heavy periods or pregnancy
  • Checking whether iron tablets are working
