What the FBC test measures

A Full Blood Count measures the number and size of your red blood cells, your haemoglobin level, the white blood cells that fight infection (with a breakdown of each type), and the platelets that help blood clot. We run it on a Medonic automated haematology analyser.

Also known as: Full Blood Count, CBC, Complete Blood Count, Blood picture.

Why doctors order it

  • Fever — including suspected dengue, where the platelet count is watched closely
  • Tiredness, paleness or breathlessness that could point to anaemia
  • Infections, unexplained bruising or bleeding
  • Routine health checks and before surgery

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. During a dengue-season fever, your doctor may ask for the FBC to be repeated daily — morning slots and home collection make that easier.
