What the TSH test measures
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is made by the pituitary gland to tell the thyroid how hard to work. Because it reacts to small changes early, it is the standard first test when a doctor wants to check thyroid function. Free T4 and Free T3 are usually added when TSH comes back outside the reference range.
Also known as: Thyroid test, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, S. TSH.
Why doctors order it
- Persistent tiredness, weight change, hair loss or feeling unusually cold or hot
- Palpitations, anxiety or a tremor without an obvious cause
- Monitoring thyroxine or anti-thyroid treatment
- Pregnancy planning and routine screening when a doctor advises it
How to prepare
No fasting is needed. If you take thyroid medication, ask your doctor whether to take it before or after the sample, and keep the timing the same on every repeat test.
